Black Friday Has Gone, Christmas Shopping Season Continues

black-friday-has-gone-christmas-shopping-season-continues

“Now the streets are empty and everybody is preparing to have a huge dinner in the evening. Most of my students went back home. For the Americans this is the biggest family holiday of the year. Tomorrow is the so called “Black Friday”. Most stores have big sales and people will line up in front of them as early as 5:00 am. In the past, I used to make road trips on Thanksgiving, because it was so nice to travel when the roads are empty.”

—an email from a friend who is now living in the US

Black Friday sales got off with a roaring start and saw a great boom this year, in terms of both brick-and-mortar and online retailers, who pulled out all the stops to prepare piles and piles of bargains waiting for sale-hungry consumers.

Eager shoppers, before midnight on Thanksgiving Day, camped out or queued up in front of certain stores to seize a chance to rush into the stores and grab the bargains immediately once the doors of many stores opened, some as early as midnight – rather than the traditional 6:00 am.

Not like traditional stores which must control strong unruly crowds rushing to grab high-definition televisions, laptops, winter coats and popular toys among the hottest items, online retailers were busy processing large quantities of orders. Bargain hunters waited in front of their computers for the special online items at steep discounts before Friday and quickly placed orders on Friday as soon as the refresh button assured them it was time to turn their fingers loose.

Online stores enjoyed a great benefit from Black Friday sales this year. According to Time.com, PayPal was most used by consumers to make purchases at online retailers and at its sister site, eBay, reported a 2.5% increase YOY.

Signaling a good start of the Christmas shopping season, Black Friday has came and left, however, people who have a hankering for Christmas gifts and New Year gifts for their family or friends constitute a major part of the online marketplace during the Christmas shopping season. And, after Black Friday, online retailers eyed a big Cyber Monday and will continue to experience a frenzy online holiday shopping season worldwide!

Clothing Retailers See Gains Ahead

In the fourth quarter consumer businesses can always catch the last fling–it’s the most important time for clothing retailers, as people tend to spend more during the holiday season. Department stores and boutiques see an increase in sales. Jeans, coats, sweaters, scarves, winter pajamas, stockings and other articles of clothing go flying off the racks during this time of year. For wholesalers it’s an exciting time because lots of people add to their wardrobes for Christmas parties, New Year celebrations and other winter festivities.

Though the financial downturn depressed the fourth quarter sales last year, things seem to be looking rather different as the end of this year comes around. Recently, clothing retailers American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and J. Crew Group Inc. offered hope for a holiday sales upturn in a Wall Street Journal report.

J. Crew is reported to have earned sharply higher profit on a 14% sales increase for its fiscal third quarter and its fiscal fourth quarter profit is estimated to reach between 37 cents and 42 cents a share, compared with a loss of $13.6 million, or 22 cents a share, a year ago.

In a sign of its optimism, American Eagle stated that in this quarter its store inventories will be up by a “mid-single digit” percentage compared with a year ago. For this holiday, American Eagle is making a big bet on denims, according to its Chief Executive Jim O’Donnell.

Great changes are ahead, however, small and medium sized retailers may still feels it’s tough to compete with these Big Box retailers. Product sourcing is important. To better win out the holiday business, retailers can find supplies from some wholesale marketplaces online, getting the most out of their free shipping service, fast delivery and most importantly, rock-bottom wholesale prices.

Mario Testino holds Kate Moss exhibition

Purses at the ready, Kate Moss fans – Mario Testino, or the King of fashion photography as he’s also known, is selling a series of never-before-seen portraits of the supermodel at an exhibition in London’s Phillips de Pury & Co.

18 photographs – all life-sized – in total will form the exhibition, of which there’ll be just two or three copies each, going some way to highlight the relationship between the pair – Testino is, if you didn’t already know, the biggest Kate Moss fan going.

“Kate represents the ultimate kind of woman, an icon of our times,” he told the Telegraph, with Simon de Pury, Phillips’ chairman, adding she’s like a modern day Marilyn Monroe.

And, if you can put your money where your mouth is, those pictures can be yours. The portraits went on sale at the exhibition yesterday and will be there until 16th July, but you’d best take your life savings to be on the safe side – Phillips is keeping schtum on the prices for the portraits, but pointed out it holds the record for another Testino photo, a significantly smaller one of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. That went for £49,250…

Now Opening | The Standard’s Stairway to Heaven

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:12 am

StandardDaniel Barry for The New York Times Le Bain, the Standard Hotel’s new rooftop bar.

With rooftop bars popping up across the city skyline with dizzying frequency this summer, none has managed to stir up more getting-on-the-list finagling than Le Bain at the Standard Hotel, where the 18th floor lounge (informally known as the Boom Boom Room) was already considered the ultimate velvet rope to cross even before it had an open-air addition.

The space, which they are calling Le Bain, lives up to the hype. When it opened last night for a preview party coordinated by “the two Andrés” – as in André Balazs, the Standard’s puppet-master, and André Saraiva, the club roi of Paris – guests entered through a service elevator that opened onto a well-chlorinated pool/bar featuring two topless women cavorting underwater, before climbing up a stairwell cluttered with graffiti, passing a vending machine selling bathing suits ($75 for board shorts?) until reaching their final destination: an oasis of lush fake-grass, pink waterbeds and a commanding view of New Jersey.

The preview crowd was decidedly mixed between fashion gays and art stars, but it portended a certain recipe for future access: Ladies, do your best to look like Taylor Momsen at her most irritated; gents, subscribe to the Pierre et Gilles school of modeling immediately.

Standard Hotel; 444 West 13th Street; standardhotels.com. Rooftop open from noon to midnight daily. Pool room stays open until 4 a.m. daily. André Saraiva will host a party there three nights a week.

Vain Glorious | The Blind Barber

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:12 am

Blind BarberPeter Svarzbein

Who: Joshua Boyd, Jeff Laub and Adam Kirsch

What:
The Blind Barber

Where: 339 East 10th Street; (212) 228-2123; blindbarber.com.

Why bother: Contrary to the name, the vision of the men behind the Blind Barber is crystal clear. Reminiscent of old-school barbershops, where men used to socialize while they got spruced up, the Blind Barber is a great place to groom, sip handcrafted cocktails and kick back with friends. Says Laub, who manages the shop, “Our barbers really care. We’re not in the business of turning tables.” To that end, Laub hired barbers with at least 10 years experience and stocked their stations with luxurious products from the Gentlemens Refinery and Sachajuan. For those early mornings that follow late nights, try the Blind Barber’s signature “Hangover Remedy Shave,” featuring a reinvigorating four-towel process (three hot, one cold) developed by Laub and his team. If your grooming service doesn’t put you in the chill zone, ease up to the bar and unwind further with a signature libation. According to Kirsch, who oversees the bar and lounge, house favorites include the Sweeney Todd (Jameson, egg whites, lemon juice and honey syrup, topped with grenadine and served on the rocks) and Rum ’n’ Rye (Overholt Rye, Goslings Rum, lime juice and Orgeat Syrup, served over ice).

How much: Cuts cost $20 to $40; shaves are $30; and beard trims are $15. All services include a complimentary cocktail.

Alber Elbaz on thin models and fashion bloggers

Other than rumours that have cropped up a couple of times that he’s set to replace Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel – he’s not, in his own words, FYI – Alber Elbaz has stayed relatively quiet, but we knew that wouldn’t last too long: today he’s thrown caution to the wind and weighed in on thin models and fashion bloggers debates.

And for the Lanvin designer, the problem with thin models is not his, nor another fashion designer’s, because everybody wants to be skinny.

“We are being accused that some models are anorexic, but we as fashion designers cannot be blamed, because you know, when I talk to women around the world, rich and poor and young and old and intellectual and not, what they want to be is skinny,” he tells Style.com. “You ask them, what is your dream? It’s to be skinny. That’s all they want, so this is something that’s happening in the world. And you know what? Me, as a designer that is not exactly skinny, all I want is comfortable clothes. All I want is beautiful. I mean, I like grey hair, I love wrinkles. But this is me. That’s why our logo is the mother and the daughter. I always feel that I have the ability or I have the luxury to design for younger and for older and for skinnier and less skinny. I feel more versatile about it.”

And his love for everyone doesn’t stop there, it reaches out to the blogosphere, too.

“I have to tell you, I love bloggers. And I’m not telling you that because I’m [trying to] bribe them. Every morning I wake up and I see the blogs,” Elbaz confesses. “There is something very innocent. There is something very honest. You can say, OK, they didn’t have the experience of seeing things. But again it’s another medium. That’s their opinion and it’s interesting to see how politically incorrect they are. Of course, when they say, “Oh my God, I love it,” I’m extremely happy. And when they say, “Oh my God, it’s a piece of shit,” I hate it.”

Victoria Beckham: world’s most glamorous celebrity?

Is Victoria Beckham the most glamorous girl in town? You bet she is, and it’s not just us saying it, it’s a fact. She’s topped Max Factor’s glamour poll, earning her the rather impressive title of the World’s Most Glamorous Celebrity.

And when she wandered back on the streets of London this week, she proved why she pipped the likes of Dannii Minogue and Angelina Jolie to the post. Black ruffle minidress from label-du-jour Isabel Marant? Towering nude platforms? A pair of VB sunglasses? It seems her days in fashion have paid off – oh, Ms. Beckham, you’ve exceeded yourself.

“Victoria Beckham has been gracing the fashion pages for years now with her glamorous looks and she has designed her own clothes range,” a spokesperson for Max Factor told InStyle. “She never leaves home without being fully made up and her signature glossy pout has become her calling card.”

Frankly, we’d expect nothing less.

Riccardo Tisci uses transsexual model for Givenchy

Riccardo Tisci loves a bit of androgony and male-female mix as much as the next Givenchy fan, but he’ll be blurring the lines between gender a little further next season by using a transsexual model in Givenchy’s AW10 ad campaign.

But Lea T – a Brazilian with a bonestructure to die for, formerly known as Leo – isn’t any old transsexual, she’s a long-time friend and personal assistant of the designer and, coincidently, a former fit model for his own line.

“She’s always been very feminine: superfragile, very aristocratic,” Tisci told WWD. “She’s part of the family.”

And before anyone gets any ideas about this being a publicity stunt, the Givenchy designer insists the inclusion of Lea T typifies the masculine-feminine aesthetic that has become one of his design signatures since his joining the French fashion house five years ago.

Expect to see Ms. T alongside Mariacarla Boscono, Tisci’s right-hand model, a pink-haired Malgosia Bela and Joan Smalls (to name but three of the further nine models) when Givenchy’s AW10 ad campaign lands in June.
